Ezekiel 42:16

He measured the East side with the measuring reede, fiue hundreth reedes, with the measuring reed round about. Ezekiel 42:16 (KJV)

Ezekiel 42:16 is part of a larger passage in which the prophet Ezekiel describes the dimensions and layout of the temple he sees in a vision. In this particular verse he provides a specific measurement of the east side of the temple complex, contributing to the detailed architectural picture that runs through several chapters of the book.

The “measuring reed” mentioned in the verse refers to a measuring instrument, likely a rod or staff, that was a common unit of measurement in biblical times. Scholars generally equate the reed with a cubit, roughly 18–30 inches (about 0.5–0.75 meters) in length, and Ezekiel’s vision defines the reed as six cubits long—approximately nine feet. This provides a clear sense of the scale used for the temple’s design.

The verse states that the east side of the temple was measured to be five hundred reeds. The phrase “round about” indicates that the measurement encompassed the entire perimeter of that side, suggesting a comprehensive assessment of the space rather than a single linear dimension.

Ezekiel’s meticulous measurements emphasize the importance of precision and order in worship. The detailed dimensions reflect God’s holiness and the need for reverence when approaching Him. By presenting the temple with exact measurements, the vision underscores that worship must be conducted with careful attention to detail, mirroring the divine order.

The broader context of Ezekiel’s temple vision is symbolic of God’s restoration and renewed presence among His people. The repeated focus on exact measurements throughout the chapters serves to remind believers that God desires worship that is orderly, reverent, and grounded in the reality of His holy standards. Even though the verse may appear technical, it contributes to the larger theme of God’s desire for His people to honor Him with precision and devotion.
