Hosea Chapter 1

Summery

Hosea 1 begins with God commanding the prophet Hosea to take a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, symbolizing Israel’s unfaithfulness to God. Hosea obeys and marries Gomer, who bears him three children. The first son is named Jezreel, signifying God’s imminent judgment on the house of Jehu for the bloodshed in Jezreel. The second child, a daughter, is named Lo-ruhamah, meaning “not pitied,” as God declares He will no longer have mercy on Israel. Lastly, a third child, another son, is named Lo-ammi, meaning “not my people,” reflecting God’s rejection of Israel as His chosen people.
