Hosea 1:11
Then shall the children of Iudah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselues one head, and they shall come vp out of the land: for great shalbe the day of Iezreel. Hosea 1:11 (KJV)
Historical Context: Hosea was a prophet who lived during the reign of several kings in Israel and Judah. His ministry took place in the 8th century BCE, a time when both Israel and Judah were facing spiritual and moral decline. Although the book of Hosea primarily focuses on the northern kingdom of Israel, it also includes prophecies concerning Judah.
Meaning of the Verse: In Hosea 1:11 the prophet speaks of a future restoration and unification of the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel. Historically, after the reign of Solomon the united kingdom split into the northern kingdom (Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah). The verse predicts that these two kingdoms, which were divided because of sin and rebellion against God, would one day be gathered together and united.
Symbolism: The phrase “the children of Judah and the children of Israel” refers to the people of the divided kingdoms and represents the entire nation of Israel, both northern and southern tribes. The term “children of Israel” is often used to refer to the whole nation as a whole.
One Head: The verse mentions that the people will “appoint themselves one head.” This signifies the appointment of a single leader or ruler who will govern and lead the united kingdom. The drafts note that this leader is often understood to be a messianic figure, pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfilment of this prophecy.
Restoration and Redemption: The phrase “they shall come up out of the land” indicates a return from exile. The people of Israel were scattered and exiled because of their disobedience and idolatry, yet the verse promises that they will be gathered and brought back to their land, symbolising God’s faithfulness, restoration, and redemption for His people.
Great shall be the day of Jezreel: The name Jezreel, a valley in Israel, holds significance throughout Hosea, being associated with both blessings and judgment. In this verse the phrase signifies a future day of divine intervention, blessing, restoration, and prosperity for the reunited kingdom of Israel.
Overall, Hosea 1:11 points to a future restoration and reunification of the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel under a single leader. It speaks of God’s faithfulness to His people despite their rebellion, and the promise of redemption and blessings in the future, ultimately foreshadowing the coming of Jesus Christ as the Messianic King who would bring spiritual restoration and unity to God’s people.
