Exodus 23:1
Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.
Exodus 23:1 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 23 sits within the covenant laws God gave Israel after their deliverance from Egypt. This verse belongs to a section often called “Laws about Honesty and Justice,” showing that truthfulness was central to the life of God’s people. The command is part of a broader call to uphold righteousness in the community.
Meaning
The first command forbids raising a false report. This includes spreading rumours, gossip, slander, whispering, backbiting, innuendos, or any word that damages a neighbour’s good name, as well as bringing false accusations in court. The second command warns against joining hands with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. To “put thine hand” means to cooperate or agree with evildoers in perverting justice. God’s people must not only avoid lying; they must also refuse to support false testimony or schemes of the wicked. Joining with them in wrongdoing makes one complicit.
Biblical connections
This command echoes the ninth commandment against bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). The next verse, Exodus 23:2, warns against following a multitude to do evil and perverting justice. Together these verses call for personal integrity and social responsibility. Truthfulness is not just a private virtue; it protects the whole community from injustice.
Application
Believers today are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This means refusing to spread unverified information, resisting pressure to join in dishonest schemes, and standing against injustice even when others do wrong. Christians should be known as people of integrity who promote truth and protect the well-being of others. In legal or communal settings, we must be courageous and refuse to participate in any false testimony.
Reflection
Consider how easily a careless word can harm another person. God values truth because He values people. Ask for wisdom to guard your speech and courage to stand apart from those who twist justice. A faithful witness honours God and builds trust in the community.
