Listen to this article

“And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.”

Exodus 24:10 describes a remarkable encounter that took place between Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and the God of Israel. Let’s explore the significance of this verse within its broader context.

Context:Exodus 24 is a pivotal chapter that follows the establishment of the covenant between God and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. In the preceding verses, Moses has ascended the mountain to receive the tablets of the Law from God.

Seeing the God of Israel:This verse begins by stating that the people “saw the God of Israel.” It’s important to note that in many other biblical instances, it is stated that no one can see God and live (Exodus 33:20). So, this encounter was a unique and extraordinary experience.

The description:The verse continues by describing what the people saw. It mentions a “paved work of a sapphire stone” under God’s feet. This description portrays a vivid image of a solid, gleaming surface like a paved street made of sapphire. The mention of sapphire emphasizes the radiant and majestic nature of God’s presence.

The body of heaven in his clearness:The latter part of the verse further amplifies the awe-inspiring sight witnessed by the people. It depicts the clearness of the sky or heavens, suggesting a pure and brilliant clarity that surrounded God’s presence.

Symbolic meanings:Symbolically, the sapphire stone represents divine beauty, holiness, and heavenly splendor. It signifies God’s majesty, purity, and glory. The clearness of heaven denotes the transparency, purity, and transcendent nature of God’s presence.

Significance:This encounter with God in His glorious manifestation had a profound impact on the Israelites. It confirmed their faith, affirmed Moses’ role as the leader chosen by God, and solidified their commitment to the covenant established earlier in the chapter.

Limitations:Although the verse states that they “saw” the God of Israel, it is crucial to understand that the fullness of God’s being was not revealed to them. God’s essential nature is beyond human comprehension and cannot be fully grasped or seen in its entirety.

In summary, Exodus 24:10 describes a remarkable moment when the people of Israel caught a glimpse of the glorious presence of God. The description of the sapphire pavement and the clearness of heaven emphasizes the majestic and radiant nature of God’s manifestation. This encounter served to confirm their faith, strengthen their commitment to the covenant, and inspire awe and reverence for the God they served.
