Listen to this article

“And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.”

Exodus 25:18 is part of a larger passage where God instructs Moses on the construction of the Ark of the Covenant and its components. This particular verse focuses on the creation of two cherubim, which are angelic beings, to be placed on the mercy seat.

The Context:In Exodus 25, God gives detailed instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings. The Ark of the Covenant was a significant element within the tabernacle, serving as a sacred container for the stone tablets bearing the Ten Commandments.

The Cherubim:Cherubim were angelic beings often associated with God’s presence and His throne. They are depicted as having multiple wings and a unique appearance. In this verse, God instructs Moses to create two cherubim out of gold.

The Mercy Seat:The mercy seat was the solid gold cover placed on top of the Ark of the Covenant. It symbolized God’s presence and was the place where the High Priest would sprinkle the blood of atonement on the Day of Atonement. The cherubim were to be placed on the two ends of the mercy seat, facing each other with their wings spread out and overshadowing the mercy seat.

Symbolism and Significance:The cherubim positioned on the mercy seat were a visual representation of God’s holiness, presence, and divine authority. They served as a reminder of the heavenly realm and the reverence due to God. The mercy seat itself was a place of atonement and forgiveness, where God would meet with His people through the mediation of the High Priest.

Spiritual Lessons:Exodus 25:18 teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it reminds us of the holiness and glory of God. The presence of the cherubim on the mercy seat illustrates the reverence we should have for God and the awesomeness of His presence. Secondly, it emphasizes the concept of atonement and forgiveness. The sprinkling of blood on the mercy seat foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the perfect atonement for our sins.

Application:As Christians, we can find encouragement in Exodus 25:18 to approach God with reverence and awe, recognizing His holiness and majesty. We can also appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate mercy seat for us, providing forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

In summary, Exodus 25:18 highlights the construction of two golden cherubim to be placed on the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. It symbolizes the presence of God and serves as a reminder of His holiness and the atonement made for sins. This verse prompts us to approach God with reverence and appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the ultimate mediator between God and humanity.
