Exodus 25:27

Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table.

Exodus 25:27 (KJV)

God gave Moses detailed instructions for the tabernacle on Mount Sinai. This verse concerns the table of showbread, a piece of furniture made of acacia wood overlaid with gold. The table held twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, and was replaced every Sabbath. The rings were placed near the border or frame of the table, as the verse states, to hold the poles used for carrying it.

The rings were not decorative. They were functional, serving as holders for the staves, which were poles made of acacia wood overlaid with gold. These poles allowed the Levites to transport the table when the Israelites moved through the wilderness. Unlike the staves for the ark of the covenant, which remained in place, the table’s staves were removed when not in use, so they would not hinder the priests who attended to the showbread weekly. The precise placement of the rings shows that every detail of worship mattered to God. The table was portable because the tabernacle had no fixed location until the people settled in the Promised Land.

The portability of the table signified that the worship of God was to be carried with the people wherever they went. This connects to the believer’s journey of faith, where God’s presence is not confined to a fixed place. The table of showbread, also called the table of the Presence, pointed to God’s continual provision and fellowship with His people.

For believers today, the rings and staves remind us that our worship should be portable. We can carry the presence of God with us in our daily lives, not just in a church building. The table’s stability, held by the rings, encourages us to trust in God’s unchanging faithfulness. Just as the table was securely carried, so our faith is secure in God’s promises.

Consider how you can make your worship mobile. Do you carry God’s presence into your work, home, and community? The golden rings were small but essential. Likewise, small acts of obedience in your life can support the greater purpose of bearing God’s presence to others. Reflect on the precision of God’s instructions and how He values order and readiness in your walk with Him.
