Exodus 25:28

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them.”

Exodus 25:28 is part of a broader section in the book of Exodus where God gives detailed instructions to Moses regarding the construction of the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the various items to be used in the worship of God. In this verse, God instructs Moses on how to make the staves or poles for the table of showbread.

The Table of Showbread:The table referred to in this verse is the Table of Showbread, also known as the Table of Presence. It was one of the sacred items to be placed inside the Holy Place of the Tabernacle. The table was made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold (Exodus 25:23-24). It was approximately 3 feet long, 1.5 feet wide, and 2.25 feet high.

Purpose of the Staves:The staves mentioned in Exodus 25:28 were used to carry the Table of Showbread. The staves were made of shittim wood, also known as acacia wood, which was known for its durability and resistance to decay. The staves were then overlaid with gold, symbolizing the preciousness and sacredness of the table. By using the staves, the table could be easily transported whenever the Israelites had to move the Tabernacle during their journey in the wilderness.

Symbolism and Lessons:The Tabernacle and its furnishings held symbolic significance and foreshadowed spiritual truths. Here are a few key lessons we can glean from Exodus 25:28:

  • Mobility and Journey: The staves highlight the nomadic nature of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. They remind us that as believers, we are also on a spiritual journey in this world. We should be ready to follow God’s leading and be adaptable in our service to Him.
  • The Presence of God: The Table of Showbread represented the presence of God among His people. The fact that the table was mobile and carried with staves signifies that God’s presence is not confined to a specific location but accompanies His people wherever they go. This foreshadows the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers today.
  • The Beauty of Holiness: The overlaying of the staves with gold emphasizes the beauty and sanctity of the table. It teaches us the importance of approaching God’s presence with reverence and awe, offering our best to Him in worship and service.
  • Christological Connection: In the New Testament, Jesus referred to Himself as the Bread of Life (John 6:35). The Table of Showbread, with its twelve loaves symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel, represents the fellowship and communion between God and His people. This points forward to the ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who provides spiritual sustenance and brings us into a personal relationship with God.
