Exodus 26:23
And two boards shalt thou make for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides.
Exodus 26:23 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 26 records God’s detailed instructions to Moses for building the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary that traveled with Israel in the wilderness. The tabernacle had three main areas: the outer courtyard, the Holy Place, and the Most Holy Place. This chapter focuses on the walls, frames, and coverings that gave the structure its shape and stability.
In verse 23, God commands two boards for the corners of the tabernacle, placed on the two sides. These corner boards joined the western end with the north and south sides, completing the rectangular shape. They were made of acacia wood overlaid with gold and fitted into silver bases, as the surrounding verses describe.
Meaning
The corner boards were essential for the tabernacle’s strength. They paired at the bottom and joined at the top with a ring, forming a double corner that held the structure firm. This detail shows the care and precision God required for His dwelling place. Even the hidden parts of the sanctuary mattered to Him.
The two boards remind us that God values both the visible and the unseen aspects of worship. The tabernacle was a place of sacrifice and meeting with God, and its stability depended on parts that few people would notice. Faithfulness in small, quiet duties supports the whole community of believers.
Biblical connections
The tabernacle was a visible sign of God’s presence among His people. This theme finds its fullest meaning in Christ, who “tabernacled” among us, as John 1:14 explains. The careful construction of the earthly sanctuary points to the greater reality of God dwelling with humanity in Jesus.
Application
Believers are called to stand together in unity, supporting one another as the boards supported the tabernacle. Every member of the church has a role in strengthening the community. Just as the corner boards gave stability, each person’s gifts and cooperation help the body of Christ grow and remain firm.
Our lives should be built on the solid foundation of God’s Word, with every detail aligned to His instructions. When we obey faithfully, even in small matters, we become a dwelling place for His Spirit. The two boards teach us that God provides for the structural integrity of His people, and He expects us to work together for His purposes.
Reflection
Consider the hidden corners of your own life. Are there areas where faithful, quiet service can strengthen others? The God who gave precise plans for the tabernacle also cares for the details of our daily walk with Him.
