Leviticus 7:4

Listen to this article

“And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that contains various laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 7 specifically deals with the regulations regarding the guilt offering and the peace offering.

Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning:Leviticus 7:4 describes the portion of the sacrifice that was to be taken away from the offering. In the sacrificial system of the Israelites, different parts of the animal were designated for specific purposes. The kidneys, along with the fat surrounding them and the caul above the liver, were to be removed from the offering.

Symbolically, the kidneys were considered to be the seat of the innermost thoughts and emotions. The fat was often associated with the best and choicest parts of an animal. By removing these specific portions, God was teaching the Israelites to offer their whole selves to Him. It was a reminder that even their deepest thoughts and desires should be dedicated to God and separated from any impurity or ungodliness.

Holiness and Purity:The act of removing the kidneys and the surrounding fat emphasized the importance of holiness and purity before God. The Israelites were called to present their offerings with reverence and a heart that sought to please God. This principle also extends to believers today. God desires our wholehearted devotion and commitment. He calls us to separate ourselves from anything that hinders our relationship with Him or compromises our holiness.

Application:Although the sacrificial system described in Leviticus is no longer practised, there are spiritual principles we can draw from this verse. As Christians, we are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), dedicating our whole selves to God. This includes our thoughts, desires, and motives.

We should examine our hearts and allow the Holy Spirit to search us, removing any impure thoughts or attitudes that hinder our walk with God. Just as the Israelites had to physically remove the kidneys and fat from the offering, we need to actively pursue a life of holiness, constantly renewing our minds and seeking to align our thoughts and desires with God’s Word (Romans 12:2).

In conclusion, Leviticus 7:4 reminds us of the importance of offering ourselves completely to God. It teaches us to seek holiness, purity, and wholehearted devotion to God in every aspect of our lives. As we strive to live in alignment with God’s Word, may we continually present ourselves as a living sacrifice, dedicated and pleasing to Him.
