Leviticus 7:5
And the Priest shall burne them vpon the Altar, for an offering made by fire vnto the Lord: it is a trespasse offering. Leviticus 7:5 (KJV)
Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that primarily deals with the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Chapter 7 specifically focuses on the instructions regarding the various offerings and sacrifices that were to be presented to the Lord. The verse introduces the trespass offering, a provision meant to atone for unintentional sins committed against God or others that required restitution. When someone crossed a boundary or violated a commandment, even unknowingly, the trespass offering provided a means to make things right.
The priest was to burn the trespass offering on the altar. Burning symbolised the complete surrender and dedication of the offering to God. Fire is associated with purification and the divine presence, and the burnt offering was presented as a fragrant and acceptable sacrifice to the Lord.
The trespass offering held significant value in the Israelites’ relationship with God. It allowed individuals to seek forgiveness and reconciliation when they had unintentionally violated His commandments, emphasizing the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance even when the transgression was not deliberate.
In the New Testament we learn that Jesus Christ fulfilled the role of the ultimate sacrifice for sin. He became the perfect Lamb of God who bore the sins of humanity, offering redemption and forgiveness to all who believe in Him. Through His death on the cross, the requirement for animal sacrifices, including the trespass offering, was fulfilled and superseded.
While the specific regulations of the Levitical offerings no longer apply to Christians, the underlying principles remain relevant. Believers are still called to acknowledge their faults, repent, and seek God’s forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. The concept of seeking forgiveness and reconciliation for unintentional sins continues to shape a faithful response to God’s grace.
In summary, Leviticus 7:5 instructs the priest to burn the trespass offering on the altar, symbolising complete surrender to God. The offering served as a means for the Israelites to obtain forgiveness for unintentional sins, and today we look to Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of that sacrificial system, offering forgiveness to all who trust in Him.
