Leviticus 11:21

Posted on 4 September 2023
Listen to this article

“Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth.”

Context:Leviticus 11 contains various dietary laws given by God to the Israelites. In this chapter, the Lord distinguishes between clean and unclean animals, specifying what the Israelites were allowed to eat and what they were to abstain from. Leviticus 11:21 falls within the section that addresses flying creeping things, particularly winged insects.

Meaning and Significance: Leviticus 11:21 is a part of God’s instructions concerning the consumption of certain types of insects. It states that the Israelites were permitted to eat certain winged insects that have four legs for walking and hopping on the ground.

This verse reveals the meticulous attention to detail that God placed on the dietary regulations for the Israelites. It showcases the divine concern for their physical well-being, as well as their obedience and holiness in following God’s commands.

Interpretation:It’s important to interpret this verse in the context of the broader dietary laws of Leviticus 11. The dietary laws served multiple purposes for the Israelites. They were intended to set the Israelites apart from the surrounding nations, reinforce their identity as a chosen people, and foster holiness in their lives.

Regarding Leviticus 11:21, it is worth noting that the specific insects mentioned are those with legs above their feet, allowing them to leap or hop on the ground. While this verse permits the consumption of these specific insects, it is essential to understand that the overall dietary laws of the Old Testament were superseded by the New Covenant in Christ (Mark 7:19, Acts 10:9-16).

Application:While the specific dietary laws of Leviticus 11 no longer apply to Christians today, there are broader principles we can draw from this passage. One principle is the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Though the dietary laws themselves may not be binding, the general principle of obedience and submission to God’s will remains crucial in the life of a believer.Additionally, this passage serves as a reminder of God’s concern for His people, even in matters as seemingly trivial as food. It encourages us to trust in God’s wisdom and provision, knowing that He has our best interests at heart.

Overall, Leviticus 11:21 reminds us of the importance of following God’s instructions, even in seemingly insignificant matters. It teaches us to cultivate obedience, trust, and faithfulness in our relationship with God, recognizing His loving guidance in every aspect of our lives.
