Listen to this article

Yet these may ye eat, of euery flying creeping thing that goeth vpon all foure, which haue legges aboue their feet, to leape withall vpon the earth. Leviticus 11:21 (KJV)

Context: Leviticus 11 contains various dietary laws given by God to the Israelites. In this chapter the Lord distinguishes between clean and unclean animals, specifying what the Israelites were allowed to eat and what they were to abstain from. Leviticus 11:21 falls within the section that addresses flying creeping things, particularly winged insects.

Meaning and Significance: Leviticus 11:21 is part of God’s instructions concerning the consumption of certain insects. It states that the Israelites were permitted to eat winged insects that have legs above their feet, enabling them to leap upon the earth. This verse reveals the meticulous attention God gave to dietary regulations, showing concern for physical well‑being as well as obedience and holiness.

Interpretation: It is important to read this verse in the broader context of Leviticus 11. The dietary laws served several purposes: they set Israel apart from surrounding nations, reinforced their identity as God’s chosen people, and fostered holiness. The specific insects mentioned are those with legs above their feet, allowing them to hop on the ground. While the verse permits eating these insects, the overall Old Testament dietary regulations were superseded by the New Covenant in Christ (see Mark 7:19; Acts 10:9‑16).

Application: Although Christians are not bound by the ceremonial food restrictions of Leviticus 11, the passage yields broader principles. One principle is the importance of obedience to God’s commands; even when the specific law no longer applies, the attitude of submission to God’s will remains essential. The passage also reminds believers of God’s concern for His people in even seemingly trivial matters such as food, encouraging trust in His wisdom and provision.

Overall, Leviticus 11:21 underscores the value of following God’s instructions, however minor they may appear. It calls believers to cultivate obedience, trust, and faithfulness in their relationship with God, recognizing His loving guidance in every aspect of life.
