Leviticus 14:20

“And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meat offering upon the altar: and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and he shall be clean.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that outlines various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites, specifically focusing on the priesthood, sacrifices, and rituals. Chapter 14 deals with the purification process of a person who has recovered from a skin disease, commonly referred to as leprosy. The detailed instructions provided in this chapter highlight the significance of physical cleanliness as well as the symbolism of spiritual cleansing.

Explanation:In verse 20, we find a description of the final steps of the purification process for the person who has recovered from a skin disease. The verse emphasizes the role of the priest in performing certain rituals and offerings to bring about the person’s cleansing.

Burnt Offering:The priest was to offer a burnt offering on the altar. A burnt offering involved the complete burning of an animal on the altar as an act of surrender and dedication to God. It symbolized the person’s desire to present themselves wholly to God, seeking His forgiveness and restoration.

Meat Offering:Alongside the burnt offering, the priest was to offer a meat offering. The meat offering was a grain offering that accompanied various sacrifices. It typically consisted of unleavened bread, oil, and frankincense. This offering represented gratitude, consecration, and acknowledgment of God’s provision and sustenance.

Atonement and Cleansing:Through the priest’s involvement in these rituals, the person who had recovered from the skin disease could experience atonement and cleansing. Atonement refers to the process of reconciliation between God and humanity, where the priest acted as an intermediary, offering sacrifices on behalf of the person to restore their relationship with God. The physical purification represented the spiritual cleansing and restoration of the individual, enabling them to reenter the community and participate in worship and other activities.

Significance and Application:While the rituals and sacrifices described in Leviticus may seem distant from our present-day context, they carry important principles that can be applied to our spiritual lives:

  • Acknowledging sin:The process of atonement in Leviticus 14 reminds us of the need to acknowledge our sins and seek God’s forgiveness. Just as the person with a skin disease recognized their uncleanness, we must recognize our own spiritual impurity and come before God humbly, seeking His forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
  • Surrender and dedication:The burnt offering represents surrendering ourselves completely to God. We are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices, dedicating ourselves to God’s service and seeking His will in all areas of our lives (Romans 12:1).
  • Gratitude and provision:The meat offering signifies gratitude and recognition of God’s provision. We should cultivate a spirit of thankfulness, acknowledging God’s blessings and relying on Him for our daily needs.
  • Spiritual cleansing:The physical cleansing of the person in Leviticus 14 points to the need for spiritual cleansing in our lives. In the New Testament, we are reminded that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross provides the ultimate atonement for our sins, cleansing us from all unrighteousness when we confess and repent (1 John 1:9).

While the rituals and offerings in Leviticus are no longer practiced in the same way, they serve as important reminders of our need for forgiveness, surrender, gratitude, and spiritual cleansing. Through Jesus Christ, we can experience complete restoration and reconciliation with God.
