Leviticus 19:11

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

"Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another."

Context:Leviticus 19 is a chapter within the book of Leviticus, which contains various laws and commandments given by God to the Israelites through Moses. This particular verse is part of a collection of ethical instructions known as the Holiness Code, which emphasises moral conduct and righteousness.

Prohibition against Stealing:The verse begins with the clear command, "Ye shall not steal." This commandment emphasises the importance of respecting other people’s property and refraining from taking what does not belong to us. Stealing is an act that goes against God’s desire for fairness, justice, and the well-being of others.

Dealing Falsely:The verse continues, "neither deal falsely." This part of the verse prohibits dishonest business practices and deceitful dealings. It emphasises the importance of integrity, honesty, and transparency in our interactions with others. As followers of God, we are called to be people of truth, who uphold ethical standards in all our transactions.

Lying:The verse concludes, "neither lie one to another." This commandment extends beyond business dealings and covers our general conduct in relationships. Lying is considered a sin because it breaks trust, promotes deception, and hinders genuine communication. As followers of God, we are encouraged to speak truthfully and to cultivate a culture of trust and authenticity.

Application and Spiritual Lessons:

  • Respect for others:The verse highlights the importance of respecting the rights and possessions of others. It calls us to practice fairness, empathy, and consideration for one another.
  • Honesty and integrity:We are reminded to conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity in all areas of life, whether it be in business, personal relationships, or day-to-day interactions.
  • Truthfulness:The verse encourages us to be people of truth, who speak truthfully and avoid falsehood. Honesty and transparency build trust and promote healthy relationships.

While Leviticus 19:11 is an Old Testament commandment given to the Israelites, its principles align with the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. Jesus emphasised the importance of loving others, treating them with respect, and speaking truthfully (Matthew 22:39, Matthew 5:37). As Christians, we are called to live out these principles in our daily lives, guided by the love and grace of Christ.

Remember, studying the Bible is not only about gaining knowledge but also about applying its teachings in our lives. So let us strive to respect others, practice honesty, and speak truthfully, reflecting the character of Christ in all we do.
