Leviticus 19:12
And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:12 (KJV)
Context
Leviticus 19 belongs to the Holiness Code, a collection of laws given to Israel after the exodus. These rules cover ethical behaviour, social relationships, and worship. This verse stands inside that code, calling God’s people to reflect His holy character in daily life.
Meaning
The command has two parts. First, the Israelites must not swear falsely by God’s name. To swear by His name means to call on Him as a witness to an oath or promise. Doing this falsely means making a promise with no intention of keeping it, or using His name to support a lie. Second, they must not profane God’s name. To profane means to treat something holy with disrespect. Using God’s name carelessly or for evil purposes dishonours Him.
The phrase “I am the LORD” gives the reason for this command. God speaks with His own authority, and He has made a covenant with Israel. His name represents His nature, holiness, and power. When His people misuse His name, they damage the honour due to Him and bring shame on the relationship He established.
Biblical connections
This verse extends the Third Commandment, which forbids taking the Lord’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7). False swearing is a serious form of that sin. The Hebrew wording points to any deceptive oath, such as denying a debt or hiding a deposit. The command also applies to every title or description of God, not only His personal name.
In the New Testament, Jesus teaches about oaths in Matthew 5:33-37. He does not cancel this law but calls His followers to a higher standard: let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no. Simple honesty makes oaths unnecessary, because a truthful person does not need extra promises to be believed.
Application
For believers today, this verse still speaks. Christians should be honest in every promise, whether in business, family, or church life. They should not use God’s name to support a lie or to add weight to a doubtful claim. Instead, they can honour Him by speaking truthfully and keeping commitments, even when it costs something.
Reflection
God’s name is holy, and our words carry weight because we bear His name. When we speak truth and keep our promises, we show that we belong to Him. This verse invites us to examine our own speech and to ask whether our words reflect the character of the God we serve.
