Leviticus 20:15

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast.”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Bible and is part of the Torah, the first five books attributed to Moses. It contains laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites to guide their worship, morality, and societal conduct. Leviticus 20:15 is found within a chapter that deals with various sexual offences and their consequences.

Prohibition of Bestiality:Leviticus 20:15 addresses the sin of bestiality, which refers to engaging in sexual relations with an animal. God explicitly states that if a man lies with a beast, both the man and the animal are to be put to death. This verse highlights the seriousness of this act and the severe penalty associated with it.

Moral and Spiritual Implications:Bestiality is condemned in the Bible as a sinful and unnatural act. It violates the created order of God, where sexual relations are intended to take place within the context of marriage between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24). It also goes against the principle of human dignity, as it debases both the human and the animal involved.

God’s Holiness and Purity:Leviticus, as a book, emphasises the holiness and purity required by God’s people. God’s standards are high, and He expects His people to live in accordance with His commands. Bestiality is seen as a violation of God’s holiness and a defilement of His intended order for human sexuality.

The Severity of the Punishment:The penalty for bestiality, as stated in Leviticus 20:15, is capital punishment. This demonstrates the seriousness of the offence in God’s eyes. The punishment serves as a deterrent to ensure that such acts are not tolerated within the Israelite community.

Application for Christians:While Christians are no longer bound by the ceremonial and civil laws of the Old Testament, the moral principles conveyed in the Bible, including the prohibition of sexual immorality, remain applicable. The New Testament also explicitly condemns sexual immorality, including acts such as adultery and homosexuality (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

God’s Redemptive Grace:While the punishment for bestiality is severe, it is essential to remember that God is also a God of grace and forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, forgiveness and redemption are available for all who repent and turn away from their sins. It is a reminder that God’s desire is for us to live in holiness and purity, but He offers forgiveness and transformation to those who seek Him.

In conclusion, Leviticus 20:15 addresses the sin of bestiality, highlighting its severity and the consequences it entails. It emphasises God’s expectation for His people to live in holiness and purity. As Christians, we are called to honour God’s design for human sexuality and to uphold moral standards outlined throughout the Bible.
