Leviticus 18:23
Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
Leviticus 18:23 (KJV)
Context
This verse stands within Leviticus 18, a collection of laws God gave to Israel through Moses. The chapter forbids many forms of sexual misconduct and opens by warning the people not to follow the practices of Egypt or Canaan (Leviticus 18:3). Such acts defile the land, and the land itself vomits out its inhabitants because of these abominations (Leviticus 18:24-28).
Meaning
The prohibition is direct: neither a man nor a woman may have sexual relations with an animal. The verse calls this act “confusion.” The Hebrew word translated as “confusion” (tebel) means a mixing or perversion. It violates the created order, blurring the distinction between humans and animals. Humans are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27), and this act dishonors that dignity.
Biblical connections
Leviticus 20:15-16 repeats this command and makes it a capital offense, showing how seriously God views this sin. The Bible consistently presents sexual union as a sacred bond within marriage between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24). The New Testament also teaches that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), so believers must flee sexual immorality and honor God with their bodies.
Application
While the ceremonial parts of the Mosaic Law no longer bind Christians under the new covenant, the moral principle here remains. This command reflects God’s design for human sexuality and the unique value of every person. It calls believers to treat their bodies as belonging to God and to avoid every form of sexual sin.
Reflection
God’s standards are not arbitrary; they protect His people and reflect His holy character. This verse reminds us that sexual purity is not only about avoiding certain acts but about honoring God in every part of life. It also shows that God’s people are called to be set apart from the surrounding nations, living in a way that pleases Him.
