Leviticus 23:17

Listen to this article

“Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD.”

Leviticus 23:17 is part of a larger passage that outlines the various feasts and holy convocations the Israelites were commanded to observe. This particular verse focuses on the Feast of Weeks, also known as the Feast of Harvest or Pentecost. Here are some key points to consider in this Bible study:

The Feast of Weeks:Leviticus 23:17 is situated within the context of the Feast of Weeks:This feast was celebrated exactly fifty days after the Passover and marked the culmination of the barley harvest. It was a time of thanksgiving and presenting offerings to the Lord.

The Wave Loaves:The verse instructs the Israelites to bring two wave loaves made from fine flour. These loaves were a special offering to the Lord. They were baked with leaven, which is unusual since leaven was typically prohibited in offerings. The inclusion of leaven in these loaves is symbolic and carries deeper spiritual significance.

The Firstfruits:The wave loaves are referred to as “the firstfruits unto the LORD.” In Jewish tradition, the firstfruits represented the initial portion of the harvest and were dedicated to God as an act of gratitude and acknowledgment of His provision. By offering the wave loaves as the firstfruits, the Israelites acknowledged God’s blessing and recognized His ownership over all the produce of the land.

Symbolism and Meaning:The wave loaves baked with leaven hold symbolic significance. Leaven represents sin and corruption in other scriptural contexts. The inclusion of leaven in this offering suggests that although sin and imperfection exist among God’s people, they can still present themselves before the Lord and offer their imperfect selves to Him in gratitude. It is a reminder that the Lord desires a genuine relationship with His people, even in their imperfect state.

Foreshadowing of Pentecost:The Feast of Weeks and the wave loaves find fulfillment in the New Testament during the events of Pentecost. In Acts 2, during the Jewish celebration of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers, empowering them for their mission. This event marked the birth of the Church and the outpouring of the Spirit on all believers. The wave loaves symbolize the unity and inclusion of both Jews and Gentiles in the body of Christ, as represented by the two loaves.

Overall, Leviticus 23:17 and the instructions regarding the wave loaves emphasize the importance of gratitude, offering, and recognizing God’s provision. They also foreshadow the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. This passage encourages believers to present themselves before the Lord, acknowledging their imperfections and trusting in His grace.
