Leviticus 26:9
For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.
Leviticus 26:9 (KJV)
Context
Leviticus 26 presents blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. Verse 9 belongs to the blessings section, which spans Leviticus 26:1-13, while the curses follow in Leviticus 26:14-46.
Meaning
God says He will “have respect unto you.” This means He turns His face toward His people with delight and careful attention. He watches over them to do them good and protect them from evil. This is not distant favor; it is intimate, loving care. The Hebrew concept of God turning toward His people indicates favor and attentiveness.
The promise to “make you fruitful” and “multiply you” includes increase of people, land, and crops. The broader context of Leviticus 26:4-5 shows this abundance. God’s blessing overflows into every area of life. He did this in Egypt even amidst affliction, and more so in the land of Canaan.
When God says He will “establish my covenant with you,” He confirms His faithfulness. This covenant echoes the one made with Abraham, where God promised to make him fruitful and multiply him (Genesis 17:2). God keeps His promises across generations.
Biblical connections
This verse connects to God’s covenant with the patriarchs—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It shows continuity in God’s redemptive plan. For Christians, while we are not under the Mosaic Law, the principle remains: God is faithful to His covenant and blesses those who walk in obedience. Ultimately, all God’s promises find their “Yes” in Christ.
Application
Today, believers can trust that God turns toward those who love Him. Obedience is not a way to earn blessing, but it opens a relationship where God’s favor flows. We can rest in His promise to be with us and to work for our good.
Reflection
The chapter also contains stern warnings of curses for disobedience. This balance shows the seriousness of obeying God’s commands. Yet verse 9 highlights God’s desire to show favor, multiply His people, and reaffirm His covenant. His loving nature shines through His promises.
