Leviticus 26:10

And yee shall eate old store, and bring forth the old, because of the new. Leviticus 26:10 (KJV)

Leviticus 26:10 is part of a chapter often referred to as the “Blessings and Curses” because it contains both blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The chapter was addressed to the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt and their journey through the wilderness. In it God established a covenant with them, providing guidelines for conduct and worship and emphasizing the importance of obedience. He outlines the rewards the Israelites would receive if they obeyed His commandments and the consequences they would face if they did not.

Focusing on the verse itself, scholars offer multiple interpretations. One view sees it as describing divine provision and abundance: in an agricultural society “ye shall eat old store” refers to leftover grain from prior harvests, indicating such plentiful blessings that old supplies remain even during new harvests. “Bring forth the old because of the new” suggests clearing space for fresh crops. Another interpretation emphasizes faithfulness and renewal, seeing the “old store” as a symbol of past blessings and the act of bringing forth the old as a picture of God’s ongoing faithfulness in renewing His promises. Both perspectives highlight God’s provision, faithfulness, and the connection between obedience and blessing.

While Christians today are not bound by the Mosaic Law’s specific covenant terms, the passage offers enduring lessons about obedience, God’s faithfulness, and living according to His will. It reminds us of the importance of obeying God, the consequences of turning away from His will, and His steadfast commitment to uphold the covenant. As with all Scripture, consulting commentaries, study resources, and seeking guidance from spiritual leaders provides deeper insight into the historical, cultural, and theological dimensions of this passage.
