Numbers 4:48

Listen to this article

“Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.”

In order to understand the context of this verse, we need to look at the preceding verses in Numbers 4.

This chapter describes the responsibilities of the Levites regarding the tabernacle and its furnishings during the Israelites’ wilderness journey.

In Numbers 4:1-3, God instructs Moses to take a census of the Kohathites, one of the Levite clans, from thirty years old and above, who were to be responsible for carrying the most sacred objects of the tabernacle.

The purpose of this census was to assign specific duties to each group within the Levite clan.

Numbers 4:23-26 provides a detailed account of the specific responsibilities given to the Kohathites in regards to the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and other sacred items.

They were to carefully cover these items with specific coverings before the Israelites moved camp.

Finally, in Numbers 4:48, the verse states that the total number of Kohathite males aged thirty years and older, who were assigned these responsibilities, was 8,580.

This number includes both the direct descendants of Kohath and those from the Merarite clan who assisted them.

This verse highlights the organisation and meticulous attention given to the duties and responsibilities associated with the tabernacle.

Each individual had a role to play in the transportation and maintenance of the sacred objects, ensuring their protection and preserving their holiness.

The large number of Kohathites assigned to these tasks demonstrates the significance and importance of the tabernacle and its contents to the Israelite community.

It is worth noting that while this verse provides valuable historical information about the organisation of the Levites, the specific numerical details may not have direct spiritual or theological implications.

However, it does serve as a reminder of the importance of faithful obedience to God’s instructions and the significance of worship and reverence for the sacred in the lives of God’s people.

Overall, Numbers 4:48 emphasises the careful attention given to the sacred objects of the tabernacle by the Kohathite clan and reminds us of the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities diligently in the service of God.
