Numbers 7:31

Listen to this article

“One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and is named after the two censuses taken of the Israelites during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It records the events that took place during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Numbers 7 describes the dedication offerings brought by the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel for the tabernacle.

Dedication Offerings:In Numbers 7, the leaders of each tribe brought offerings to consecrate the tabernacle. These offerings were presented by each tribe on successive days, and each leader brought the same set of offerings. Verse 31 specifically mentions the offerings brought by Shelumiel, the leader of the tribe of Simeon. The offerings consisted of one young bullock, one ram, and one lamb of the first year for a burnt offering.

Symbolism of the Offerings:The burnt offering was a significant sacrifice in the Old Testament system of worship. It was entirely consumed by fire on the altar, symbolising the complete dedication and surrender of the worshiper to God. The young bullock, ram, and lamb of the first year were considered valuable animals, representing the leaders’ willingness to offer something precious to God. This act demonstrated their commitment to the Lord and their desire to consecrate the tabernacle for His service.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Total Dedication:The burnt offerings brought by the tribal leaders convey the importance of wholehearted dedication to God. As leaders, they set an example for the people by offering their best to the Lord. Similarly, we are called to offer our entire lives as living sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1). Our commitment to God should be unwavering and our devotion complete.
  • Willingness to Sacrifice:The leaders’ offerings remind us of the cost and sacrifice involved in serving God. They willingly gave up valuable animals, reflecting their willingness to give up something precious for the sake of God’s work. As believers, we are called to sacrifice our time, talents, resources, and desires for the Lord’s purposes. Our willingness to give sacrificially demonstrates our love for God and our commitment to His kingdom.
  • Symbolic Representation of Christ:In the burnt offerings, we can also see a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial system in the Old Testament pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Jesus became the perfect Lamb of God who was offered once for all to atone for our sins. He willingly gave Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, demonstrating God’s love and providing redemption for humanity.

Application:

  • Dedication and Surrender:Reflect on your own life and consider if you have fully dedicated yourself to God. Are there areas where you are holding back or not fully surrendering to His will? Pray and ask God to help you offer your whole life as a burnt offering, committing everything to His service.
  • Sacrificial Giving:Evaluate your attitude towards giving and sacrificially serving others. Are you willing to give up your time, resources, and comfort for the sake of God’s kingdom? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in how you can give more generously and sacrificially to support the work of God and bless those in need.
  • Gratitude for Christ’s Sacrifice:Take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Thank God for His love and grace in providing a way for our salvation. Meditate on the depth of His sacrifice and respond with gratitude and a desire to live a life that honours Him.
