Numbers 7:31
His offering was one silver charger of the weight of an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:
Numbers 7:31 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the offering brought by Abidan, son of Gideoni, prince of the tribe of Benjamin, for the dedication of the altar. Numbers 7 describes how each of the twelve tribal leaders presented an identical offering on successive days. This orderly pattern shows that every tribe, regardless of size or position, shared equally in worship. God values the contribution of each tribe.
Meaning
The offering included one silver charger weighing 130 shekels and one silver bowl weighing 70 shekels, measured by the sanctuary shekel. This official standard emphasized exactness and integrity in God’s service. Both vessels were filled with fine flour mingled with oil, which formed a grain offering. The fine flour and oil symbolized a pure and consecrated gift, pointing to the people’s dedication and dependence on God.
Biblical connections
The repeated pattern in Numbers 7 shows that God takes notice of and values the faithful contributions of every person. The silver charger and bowl were likely used in the service of the altar of burnt offering, possibly to hold the grain offering or the portions of the sacrifice that belonged to the priests. This detail underscores that every part of worship has purpose and meaning.
Application
Readers should first identify what God commands and why. Application begins with reverence for God’s word, careful observation, and a clear distinction between the original setting and present responsibilities. Like the tribal leaders, believers today can offer gifts that are generous, pure, and given with a whole heart. God honors specific, faithful acts of worship.
Reflection
God notices specific, faithful acts of worship. The detailed record of these vessels shows that no sincere offering is too small or overlooked. This verse calls readers to serve the Lord with integrity and devotion, trusting that He honors every faithful gift.
