Numbers 7:85

Each charger of silver weighing an hundred and thirty shekels, each bowl seventy: all the silver vessels weighed two thousand and four hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:

Numbers 7:85 (KJV)

This verse closes the long record of offerings that the twelve tribal leaders brought for the dedication of the altar. Each leader gave the same set of sacred items, including silver chargers and bowls, for use in the tabernacle. The tabernacle was the portable sanctuary where Israel worshipped and offered sacrifices during the wilderness journey. Numbers 7:85 sums up the total weight of those silver vessels: each charger weighed one hundred and thirty shekels, each bowl seventy, and all together two thousand and four hundred shekels.

The phrase “after the shekel of the sanctuary” points to the official standard of weight used in tabernacle service. This careful accounting shows that God’s people measured their gifts honestly and precisely. The repeated identical offerings from every tribe also display unity and equality before the Lord. No tribe was greater or lesser in worship; each contributed the same valuable gift.

The detailed list in Numbers 7 reflects the orderly worship system that God established for Israel. This same concern for faithful giving appears later in the New Testament, where believers are encouraged to give willingly and generously (2 Corinthians 9:7). The connection is direct: God values the specific, faithful contributions of His people for the work of worship.

This verse teaches that our offerings to God should be generous, orderly, and given with a willing heart. The tribal leaders did not give leftovers; they gave costly silver, measured carefully. In the same way, our time, money, and abilities are to be offered for the service of God’s house and His people. The record of their gifts reminds us that God notices and values what we bring to Him.

The silver vessels were practical tools for sacrifice, but they also expressed devotion to the covenant. As the Israelites moved through the desert, these gifts supported the worship that kept them connected to God. This verse calls us to consider how our own contributions, whether large or small, help build a place for God’s presence among His people today.
