Numbers 7:83

And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Ahira the son of Enan.

Numbers 7:83 (KJV)

Ahira the son of Enan led the tribe of Naphtali. On the twelfth day of the altar’s dedication, he brought the same offerings as every other tribal leader (Numbers 7:78). This equality shows that no tribe stood above another in worship. Each leader came on a separate day, yet the gifts were identical, so the whole nation shared one standard of devotion before God.

The peace offering was a voluntary act of gratitude and fellowship. Unlike the burnt offering, which was wholly consumed, this sacrifice was shared: part burned on the altar, part given to priests, and part eaten by the worshiper with family and friends. The animals—two oxen, five rams, five he goats, and five lambs—were identical for each leader. The repeated number five may remind readers of God’s grace, though this symbolism is not certain. The peace offering also expressed thanksgiving, helped fulfill a vow, and restored fellowship with God and others.

This offering completes the sequence of dedications recorded in Numbers 7. Ahira is named in Numbers 1:15 and 2:29 as the prince of Naphtali, and his gift on the twelfth day finishes the list. The peace offering points to fellowship with God, a theme fulfilled in Christ, who is called our peace and the means of reconciliation (Ephesians 2:14).

Believers today can express gratitude through worship and daily dedication. Just as the peace offering was shared, Christians are called to fellowship with God and with one another. The unity of the tribes reminds us that all are equal before God. Our giving and service should reflect that same spirit of joyful, voluntary thankfulness.

Consider how your own acts of thanksgiving reflect the spirit of this ancient sacrifice. Does your worship draw you closer to God and to others? Let the peace offering inspire you to live in gratitude and harmony with your brothers and sisters in Christ.
