Numbers 9:8

And Moses saide vnto them, Stand still, and I will heare what the Lord wil command concerning you. Numbers 9:8 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account in the book of Numbers that describes the establishment and observance of the annual Passover festival among the Israelites in the wilderness. The context of Numbers 9:8 is that the children of Israel were in the wilderness, and the time had come for them to celebrate the Passover according to God’s command.

In this passage Moses is addressing a specific group of people who had raised a concern. Some of the Israelites were ritually unclean because they had been in contact with a dead body, and that impurity prevented them from participating in the Passover feast. They approached Moses seeking guidance on how to proceed in this situation.

Moses instructs them to “stand still,” indicating that they should wait and refrain from taking any action until he hears from the Lord. Moses had developed a close relationship with God, and he understood the importance of seeking divine guidance before making decisions. The phrase “let me hear the voice of the LORD concerning you” (or “I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you”) demonstrates Moses’ faith in God’s ability to provide direction and a solution that aligns with His will.

This verse highlights several important principles for believers today.

First, seeking God’s guidance: just as Moses sought the Lord’s direction, we should approach important decisions and challenges with a desire to hear from the Lord, seeking His wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and counsel from other believers.

Second, patience and trust: Moses’ command to “stand still” emphasizes the need for patience; we must wait for God’s timing rather than act impulsively, trusting in His faithfulness to provide guidance.

Third, obedience to God’s commands: Moses assured the people that he would hear what the Lord commanded concerning them. Likewise, we have the privilege of God’s Word, the Bible, as a guide. By studying and meditating on Scripture we can discern God’s commands and align our lives with His will.
