Numbers 9:9

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Numbers 9:9 (KJV)

This verse opens a larger passage, Numbers 9:9-14, where the LORD gives Moses further instructions about the Passover. The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land, including laws and events during their wilderness wanderings. In Numbers 9, the LORD commands the observance of Passover, which commemorates deliverance from slavery in Egypt. This command came during the second year in the wilderness, just before the Israelites were about to depart from Sinai.

The phrase “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying” is a common formula in the Pentateuch, indicating that what follows is authoritative divine instruction. It shows the LORD speaking directly to Moses, continuing the pattern of divine revelation and guidance. This verse is a transitional statement between the initial command in Numbers 9:1-8 and the explanation in Numbers 9:10-14. It signifies that the LORD is about to impart further clarification regarding the observance of the Passover.

The immediate context is that some Israelites were ceremonially unclean and could not keep the Passover at the appointed time. This verse sets the stage for God’s gracious provision in verses 10-14, allowing those who were unable to participate to observe it later. This shows God’s desire for inclusion and His practical wisdom in applying His laws.

This verse reminds us that God speaks through His Word and provides direction for His people. His instructions are given for our good and His glory. When we face situations where we cannot fulfill a command, we can seek the LORD’s guidance, trusting that He provides a way for us to obey.

God initiates communication with His people through His chosen mediator, Moses. His instructions are to be received and obeyed. This pattern of divine communication underscores Moses’ role as mediator and points to the seriousness of God’s holy presence. For us, it encourages reverence for God’s Word and confidence in His care for every detail of our lives.
