Numbers 9:12

Listen to this article

"They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and it describes the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. This verse is part of the instructions given by God to Moses regarding the observance of the Passover.

The Passover Feast:The Passover was an important annual festival for the Israelites, commemorating their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. It was a time to remember God’s faithfulness and to renew their commitment to Him. The Passover lamb was sacrificed and its blood was used to mark the doorposts of the Israelites’ homes, signifying their obedience to God’s command and protection from the plague of death.

Leaving None until Morning:In Numbers 9:12, God commands that none of the Passover lamb should be left until morning. This instruction emphasises the urgency and significance of the Passover feast. It was to be eaten entirely in one night, symbolising the Israelites’ readiness to depart from Egypt at a moment’s notice. It also represented their complete trust in God’s provision, as they relied on Him for sustenance during their journey in the wilderness.

Breaking No Bone:Another specific instruction given in Numbers 9:12 is not to break any bone of the Passover lamb. This command foreshadows the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the Passover Lamb in the New Testament. In John 19:36, this verse is quoted, highlighting the significance of Jesus’ unbroken bones on the cross. It is a prophecy fulfilled, showing that Jesus is the ultimate Passover Lamb whose sacrifice brings salvation and redemption for all who believe.

Observance of Passover:The verse concludes by stating that the Israelites were to observe the Passover according to all the ordinances. This indicates that God’s instructions regarding the Passover were to be followed precisely. The Israelites were to remember and celebrate this event in the prescribed manner, keeping alive their history and relationship with God.

Application:

  • Trusting God’s Provision:Like the Israelites who relied on God for sustenance in the wilderness, we are reminded to trust in God’s provision in our lives. He is our provider, and we can rely on Him to meet our needs.
  • Remembering God’s Faithfulness:Just as the Passover was a time of remembrance for the Israelites, we should also take time to remember and reflect on God’s faithfulness in our lives. He has delivered us from spiritual slavery and continues to guide and protect us.
  • Jesus as the Passover Lamb:Numbers 9:12 points to Jesus Christ as the ultimate Passover Lamb. We can reflect on His sacrifice on the cross, where His bones were not broken, fulfilling the prophecy. Through His sacrifice, we find salvation and freedom from sin.
  • Obedience to God’s Commands:The Israelites were instructed to follow God’s ordinances regarding the Passover. Similarly, we are called to obey God’s commands as revealed in His Word. Our obedience demonstrates our love for Him and our desire to live in accordance with His will.
