Numbers 13:19

Listen to this article

“And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds.”

In this verse, Moses sends twelve spies, one from each tribe of Israel, to explore the land of Canaan, which God had promised to give them as their inheritance. The spies were to gather information about the land, its inhabitants, the nature of its cities, and the fertility of the land. This verse specifically addresses the aspects they were instructed to consider.

The nature of the land:Moses instructs the spies to examine whether the land is "good or bad." This refers to the quality and suitability of the land for cultivation and settlement. The Israelites were expecting a fruitful and prosperous land, so the spies were to assess its potential for supporting their community.

The cities in the land:The spies were to determine the types of cities the inhabitants dwelled in. This included whether they lived in tents or in fortified strongholds. The purpose was to gain insight into the strength of the cities and the military capabilities of the people who inhabited them. This information would help the Israelites assess the challenges they might face in conquering the land.

By examining these aspects, the spies could provide a comprehensive report to the Israelites, helping them make informed decisions about entering and possessing the land of Canaan.

It is worth noting that the story continues in Numbers 13 with the spies’ exploration of the land and their subsequent report, which had a significant impact on the Israelites’ faith and their journey towards the Promised Land. The majority of the spies gave a discouraging report, focusing on the strength of the cities and the perceived difficulty of conquering the land. This caused fear and doubt among the people, leading to their rebellion against God’s command to enter the land immediately. Only Joshua and Caleb, among the twelve spies, expressed faith in God’s ability to give them victory and encouraged the Israelites to trust in Him.

This episode serves as a lesson about the importance of faith, trust, and obedience to God’s promises. It also emphasizes the consequences of succumbing to fear and doubt instead of relying on God’s faithfulness and power.
