“If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.”
Context:In the book of Numbers, the Israelites had been delivered from slavery in Egypt and were on the brink of entering the promised land of Canaan. However, upon hearing the negative report of the ten spies who had explored the land, the Israelites became fearful and doubted God’s ability to give them victory over the inhabitants of the land. In this verse, Caleb, one of the twelve spies, addresses the congregation, expressing his faith in God’s promise and assurance that God would bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey.
- Trust in God’s delight:Caleb’s statement begins with the affirmation that if the LORD delights in them, He will bring them into the promised land. This highlights the importance of knowing and trusting in God’s character. God had already shown His faithfulness and power by delivering the Israelites from Egypt, and Caleb believed that if they continued to follow God’s guidance, He would fulfill His promise. As believers, we can also trust in God’s delight and favour upon us, knowing that He is faithful to fulfil His promises in our lives.
- God’s provision and inheritance:Caleb acknowledges that God will not only bring them into the land but also give it to them. The promised land was described as a land flowing with milk and honey, symbolising its abundance, fertility, and prosperity. This signifies God’s desire to provide for His people and bless them with a good inheritance. It reminds us that God is not only concerned about our spiritual well-being but also our physical needs and blessings in this life.
- The faithfulness of God:Despite the majority of the spies bringing back a negative report, Caleb demonstrates his unwavering faith in God’s ability to fulfil His promises. He believed that the giants and challenges in the land could be overcome with God’s help. This verse reminds us of the importance of having faith in God’s faithfulness, even when circumstances seem difficult or impossible. It encourages us to trust that God is able to accomplish what He has promised, regardless of the obstacles we may face.
Application:
- Trust in God’s delight:Take time to reflect on God’s faithfulness in your life. Remember instances when He has shown His favour and love towards you. Trust that He delights in you and is working for your good, even in challenging situations.
- God’s provision and inheritance:Recognise that God is your provider, and He desires to bless you abundantly. Be grateful for the physical blessings you have received from Him. Seek His guidance and trust Him to meet your needs.
- The faithfulness of God:When facing challenges or obstacles, hold onto your faith in God’s faithfulness. Remember that with God, nothing is impossible. Seek His strength and guidance, and trust that He will fulfil His promises in your life.
