Numbers 14:9

Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.

Numbers 14:9 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records Israel’s journey through the wilderness after deliverance from Egypt. At the border of Canaan, twelve spies explored the land and returned with a report. Ten spies spread fear by describing strong inhabitants and fortified cities, but Caleb and Joshua spoke with faith.

The verse opens with a warning against rebellion. Rebellion here is not mere disobedience; it is refusing to trust God’s promise and leadership. The people had grumbled and doubted before, even after witnessing His miracles. Fear of the inhabitants is directly linked to rebellion, because fearing them means distrusting God’s power.

Caleb calls the inhabitants “bread for us.” This means they will be easily overcome, not that they are literal food. Their “defence is departed from them“—their protection is removed, for God has already given them into Israel’s hand. The ground of confidence is “the LORD is with us.” God’s presence makes fear irrational and rebellion inexcusable.

This verse contrasts the people’s fear of man with faith in God’s presence. The command “fear them not” is repeated, emphasizing the need to consciously reject fear. The only thing that can hinder Israel from possessing the land is their own rebellion against the Lord. God’s presence with His people is sufficient to overcome any opposition.

In our lives, situations arise that provoke fear and doubt. Remembering that the LORD is with us empowers us to step out in faith and confront obstacles with confidence. We must guard against allowing fear to dominate our decisions, especially when facing daunting challenges. Like Caleb, we can look beyond circumstances to God’s sovereign power and promise.

This passage calls us to trust God’s promises rather than be intimidated by apparent obstacles. God’s presence with His people is sufficient to overcome any opposition. Let us align our hearts with God’s faithful leading, refusing to rebel through unbelief.
