Numbers 18:19
All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the Lord, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the Lord unto thee and to thy seed with thee.
Numbers 18:19 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records how God organised the people of Israel during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this verse God speaks directly to Aaron the high priest and his descendants. He gives them a permanent share of the offerings that the Israelites bring to Him. This arrangement provided for the priests so they could serve at the tabernacle without worrying about daily food. God’s instruction here is part of a larger system that set apart the tribe of Levi for holy service.
Meaning
The heave offerings were gifts lifted up or waved before the Lord as a sign of dedication. The holy things included parts of animal sacrifices, grain offerings, and firstfruits set apart for God’s service. God gave these to Aaron, his sons, and his daughters, showing that the whole priestly household was included in His care. The phrase “covenant of salt” points to a lasting and unbreakable agreement. In ancient times salt preserved food and symbolised purity and permanence. Therefore this covenant would not decay or be cancelled. Salt was a common sign of enduring obligation in the ancient world, making the promise clear and strong.
Biblical connections
The promise to Aaron and his family was “a statute for ever” before the Lord. This permanent provision reminds us of God’s faithfulness to those He calls. The New Testament shows that Christ is our great High Priest, and through Him God establishes an eternal covenant that cannot be broken. Just as the priests received their portion from the offerings, believers today can trust that God will supply what is needed for His work and for those who serve Him. The covenant of salt also points forward to the unchangeable nature of God’s promises, which find their ultimate fulfilment in Christ.
Application
Although the old priesthood no longer exists, the principles remain. God is faithful to provide for His people, especially for those who devote themselves to spiritual service. We honour God when we bring our offerings with a willing heart. We also show respect for His servants by supporting them materially. This verse encourages us to be generous and to trust that God will never abandon those who belong to Him. Our giving is not merely a duty but a joyful response to God’s own generosity toward us.
Reflection
The covenant of salt teaches us that God’s promises are sure and lasting. We can rest in His unchanging faithfulness. Our service to God is not based on our own strength but on His enduring covenant. Let us respond with gratitude, giving cheerfully and trusting Him to provide. As we give, we participate in a holy work that God Himself has established and preserved. This truth calls us to live with confidence, knowing that the God who kept His word to Aaron will also keep every promise He has made to us in Christ.
