Numbers 18:21
And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Numbers 18:21 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records Israel’s wilderness journey after the exodus from Egypt. In Numbers 18, God assigns the tribe of Levi their duties and privileges regarding the tabernacle. The Levites were set apart to serve God there, and they received no land inheritance like the other tribes. This arrangement was deliberate: their work was sacred, and their provision came from the Lord in a different way.
Meaning
God declares that He has given the Levites all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance. The tithe was a tenth of the produce and livestock that the Israelites offered to the Lord. This tithe became the Levites’ portion, replacing a land inheritance. The phrase “for their service” shows that this provision was tied directly to their work in the tabernacle. Their inheritance was not land but the Lord Himself and the tithes of the people, which sustained them in their sacred duties. God’s care for His servants is clear: He did not leave them without support but gave them a reliable portion from the people’s offerings.
The Levites had many responsibilities: caring for the sacred furniture, offering sacrifices, assisting the priests, and teaching the people the Law of God. Because they devoted their lives to this service, God made sure they were provided for through the tithes. This practical arrangement allowed them to focus on ministry without the distraction of farming or herding for their own livelihood.
Biblical connections
This principle of supporting those who serve God continues in the New Testament. The apostle Paul teaches that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:14). Just as the Levites depended on the tithes, so those who minister today depend on the generous support of God’s people. The same God who provided for the Levites also promises to supply the needs of His servants in every age.
Application
While the Old Testament practice of tithing had a specific cultural context, the principle of supporting those in ministry remains relevant. We are encouraged to give generously and cheerfully to support the work of the church (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). Tithing reminds us that everything we have comes from God, and we are to steward our resources wisely and sacrificially. Giving is not merely a duty; it is a way to honor God and participate in His work.
Beyond money, we can offer our time, talents, and gifts to serve in the church and community. Just as the Levites were dedicated to serving God and the people, we too can find fulfillment in using our abilities to honour God. When we give, we trust that God will use our offerings to sustain His work and care for His servants.
Reflection
This verse shows God’s care for those who serve Him. He did not leave the Levites without provision; He gave them a clear inheritance through the tithes. This reminds us that God is faithful to supply the needs of His servants. It also calls us to recognize the value of supporting spiritual work and to trust that God will provide for those who dedicate their lives to His service. As we give, we participate in God’s ongoing provision for His people.
