Numbers 18:31

Posted on 25 December 2023
Listen to this article

"And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and it focuses on the journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, God is establishing the roles and responsibilities of the Levites, specifically the descendants of Aaron, who were chosen to serve in the tabernacle.

Significance of the verse:Numbers 18:31 emphasises the provision and reward that God promises to the Levites for their service in the tabernacle. The verse states that they and their households are to eat the offerings that are given to them. This provision demonstrates God’s care for those who faithfully serve Him.

Reward for service:The Levites were responsible for various duties in the tabernacle, including the maintenance of the sanctuary, performing sacrifices, and assisting the priests. They did not receive a portion of the land as an inheritance, but their service to God was considered their reward. This verse highlights the idea that God is not unjust to overlook the labour and dedication of His servants.

Spiritual application:Although the verse specifically addresses the Levites, there are broader principles that can be applied to Christians today:

  • Service to God:As believers, we are called to serve God with our talents, gifts, and resources. Our service can take various forms, such as serving in the church, ministering to others, or using our skills for God’s glory. This verse reminds us that our service is not in vain, and God sees and rewards our efforts.
  • Provision and reward:Just as God provided for the Levites, He promises to meet the needs of His children. This does not necessarily mean material wealth, but it includes the assurance of His provision and care. God rewards our faithfulness, both in this life and in eternity.
  • Family involvement:The verse mentions that the Levites and their households were to partake of the offerings. This highlights the importance of involving our families in serving God. Our service should extend to our homes, where we nurture a love for God and His Word, and encourage our families to live for Him.

Gratitude and commitment:Reflecting on this verse should lead us to express gratitude for God’s provision and faithfulness. It should also motivate us to serve Him wholeheartedly, knowing that our service is not in vain and that God rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Remember, the specific verse you asked about is within a broader context, and studying the entire chapter and book of Numbers will provide a deeper understanding of its significance and application.
