Numbers 18:30
Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress.
Numbers 18:30 (KJV)
Context
Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the Law of Moses. God gave these instructions to Israel during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Here God speaks to Moses about the tithes and offerings for the Levites, who served in the tabernacle and received no land inheritance like the other tribes.
Meaning
The word “heaved” means lifting up or presenting a portion as an offering to the Lord. The Levites received tithes from the people, and they were to take a tenth of those tithes and offer it as a heave offering. In Numbers 18:27, God says this offering is reckoned to them as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor and the fullness of the winepress. After they have heaved the best portion, the rest is counted as their own increase, just as a farmer’s harvest from the threshingfloor or the yield from the winepress belongs to him.
The threshingfloor was where grain was processed, and the winepress was used for extracting grape juice. These images represent agricultural abundance and legitimate provision. The portion the Levites kept for their households was not a gift of charity but their rightful produce, given by God through the tithes of the people.
Biblical connections
The principle of offering the first and the best appears throughout the Law. The Levites were not exempt from this rule; they too had to honor the Lord with the choicest part of what they received. This tenth of the tithe was set apart as hallowed and given to Aaron the priest. The verse affirms that God is not unjust. He provided for the material needs of His servants, and they were permitted to use the remainder for their own families.
Application
This passage teaches stewardship and gratitude. Giving back to God a portion of what He provides was a way for Israel to honor Him and support His work. The instruction to offer the first portion reminds believers to give sacrificially and with a generous heart, putting God first and offering Him the very best, not the leftover or inferior part.
Today, giving a portion of income to support the church and those in need remains a relevant practice. The principle of presenting the best to God applies to resources, talents, and time. Service to God is not in vain; He sees and rewards faithful labor.
Reflection
God is worthy of the first and finest of what we have. When we give Him our best, we acknowledge that everything we possess comes from Him. The Levites’ example shows that even those who serve God must honor Him with their portion. This verse encourages us to recognize God’s blessing and provision in our lives and to respond with joyful, generous giving.
