Numbers 22:18

Posted on 29 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.”

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the events of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular passage, the Israelites had reached the plains of Moab, and Balak, the king of Moab, became alarmed at the growing number and strength of the Israelites. Balak sent messengers to the prophet Balaam, asking him to curse the Israelites.

Balaam’s Encounter with Balak:Balak sent messengers to Balaam, a renowned prophet known for his ability to bless or curse people. Balak hoped that Balaam’s curses would weaken the Israelites. Balaam received the messengers and listened to Balak’s request.

Balaam’s Response:In his response, Balaam affirmed his commitment to adhere strictly to the word of the Lord his God. Despite the tempting offer of Balak’s riches, Balaam made it clear that he could not go beyond the instructions given by God. This statement emphasized Balaam’s devotion to God and his acknowledgment that he could only act in accordance with God’s will.

Lessons from Numbers 22:18:

  • Loyalty to God’s Word:Balaam’s response showcases his loyalty to God’s instructions. As believers, we are called to prioritise and obey God’s word above all else, even when faced with attractive worldly offers. Balaam’s unwavering commitment to God’s commands serves as a reminder for us to remain faithful to God’s truth.
  • Integrity in the Face of Temptation:Balaam’s refusal to compromise his principles for personal gain demonstrates the importance of maintaining integrity. When faced with alluring temptations or pressures to deviate from God’s will, we should imitate Balaam’s resolve by remaining steadfast in our faith and standing firm on God’s principles.
  • Trusting in God’s Guidance:Balaam’s words reflect his trust in God’s guidance. He understood that he was merely an instrument of God’s will and that his actions should align with God’s purposes. Similarly, we should seek God’s guidance and trust in His leading in all aspects of our lives, recognising that His plans are higher and better than our own.
  • God’s Sovereignty:Balaam’s response highlights the sovereignty of God. Even though Balak offered him wealth and prestige, Balaam recognised that he could not alter or exceed God’s commands. This verse reminds us of God’s authority and control over our lives, reminding us to submit to His will and trust in His perfect plans.

In summary, Numbers 22:18 presents Balaam’s unwavering commitment to following God’s word and refusing to compromise for personal gain. Through this passage, we are encouraged to prioritise God’s truth, maintain integrity, trust in His guidance, and acknowledge His sovereignty over our lives.
