Numbers 22:39

Listen to this article

“Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjathhuzoth.”

Context and Background:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and recounts the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 22, we encounter the story of Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet, and Balak, the king of Moab.

Balak was alarmed by the Israelites’ presence and feared their military might. He sought to hire Balaam, a renowned diviner, to curse the Israelites and weaken them. However, God commanded Balaam not to curse the Israelites because they were blessed (Numbers 22:12).

Balaam’s Journey with Balak:In Numbers 22:39, we find that Balaam eventually decides to accompany Balak, the Moabite king, to a place called Kirjathhuzoth. After initially refusing to go with Balak due to God’s command, Balaam changed his mind and received permission from God to go but with the understanding that he would only speak what God instructed him to say (Numbers 22:20-21).

Significance and Lessons:

  • Obedience to God’s Command:Initially, Balaam hesitated to obey God’s instructions, but he eventually followed God’s directive to go with Balak. This highlights the importance of obeying God’s commands and seeking His guidance in our lives. Even when faced with conflicting desires or pressures, it is crucial to prioritize God’s will above all else.
  • God’s Authority Over Prophetic Utterances:Balaam’s condition for going with Balak was that he would only speak what God commanded him. This emphasizes that prophets or diviners should not use their gift for personal gain or to gratify others’ desires. Instead, they should submit to God’s authority and speak only His words. It serves as a reminder that God’s will and purposes should always take precedence over human agendas.
  • God’s Protection:Despite Balaam’s initial desire to curse Israel, God intervened to protect His chosen people. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness in safeguarding His promises and the well-being of His people. It reminds us that no matter what opposition or plans may arise against us, God’s providence and protection are with us.

Application:

  • Prioritize obedience to God’s commands, even when faced with conflicting pressures or desires.
  • Seek God’s guidance and listen for His voice in all aspects of life.
  • Recognize the authority of God’s word and align our speech and actions with His will.
  • Trust in God’s protection and faithfulness, knowing that He is with us even in the face of opposition or adversity.

By studying this passage, we gain insights into obedience, God’s authority, and His faithfulness. It encourages us to align our lives with God’s will and trust in His protection and provision.
