Listen to this article

And the Lord met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and saide, Goe againe vnto Balak, and say thus. Numbers 23:16 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, recording the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land. In Numbers 22‑24 we encounter the story of Balaam, a diviner whom Balak, the king of Moab, hired in an attempt to curse the Israelites.

Balaam and Balak: Balak was alarmed by the military might of Israel and feared their presence in his territory. He hoped that by securing a curse from Balaam he could weaken or drive the people away. Yet God had already declared that Israel was blessed and would not be cursed.

The Meeting with God: Numbers 23:16 records that the LORD met Balaam and put a word in his mouth (or opened his mouth) to give him a message. This encounter occurs during Balaam’s second attempt to curse Israel, after he had already delivered an oracle that blessed them despite Balak’s request. Although Balaam desired reward and initially sought to please Balak, God intervened and prevented any curse from being spoken against His chosen people.

God’s Instruction: The verse states that God instructed Balaam to go again to Balak and convey a specific message. That message would further confirm God’s favour and blessing upon Israel, making clear that any attempt to curse them was futile.

Lessons and Takeaways:

  • God’s sovereignty: The passage highlights the LORD’s authority over human affairs, ensuring that His purposes are fulfilled regardless of human intent.
  • God’s protection and blessing: Israel’s safety and prosperity rest on God’s watchful care, rendering Balak’s hostile schemes ineffective.
  • God’s faithfulness: The LORD remains faithful to His promises, refusing to allow a curse to overturn the blessing He has already pronounced.

Application:

Trust in God’s sovereignty, recognizing that He directs even the words of those who might oppose us. Seek God’s blessing by living in obedience to His commands, and stand firm in the promises of the covenant, knowing that our security is rooted in God’s faithfulness rather than in circumstances.

Numbers 23:16 therefore teaches us about divine sovereignty, protection, and faithfulness, urging believers to trust, seek blessings, and remain steadfast in God’s promises.
