Numbers 23:16
And the Lord met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.
Numbers 23:16 (KJV)
Context
The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land. In Numbers 22–24 we encounter the story of Balaam, a diviner whom Balak, the king of Moab, hired in an attempt to curse the Israelites.
Balak was alarmed by the military might of Israel and feared their presence in his territory. He hoped that by securing a curse from Balaam he could weaken or drive the people away. Yet God had already declared that Israel was blessed and would not be cursed.
Meaning
Numbers 23:16 records that the LORD met Balaam and put a word in his mouth, giving him a specific message to speak. This encounter occurs during Balaam’s second attempt to curse Israel, after he had already delivered an oracle that blessed them despite Balak’s request. The phrase “put a word in his mouth” signifies God’s sovereign control over Balaam’s speech; Balaam could not speak his own words or the curses Balak desired, but only God’s message. Although Balaam desired reward and initially sought to please Balak, God intervened and prevented any curse from being spoken against His chosen people.
The verse states that God instructed Balaam to go again to Balak and convey a specific message. That message, recorded in Numbers 23:18–24, would further confirm God’s favour and blessing upon Israel, making clear that any attempt to curse them was futile. This divine encounter mirrors the earlier event in Numbers 23:5, where God similarly put a word in Balaam’s mouth.
Biblical connections
God’s sovereignty is highlighted throughout this passage, ensuring that His purposes are fulfilled regardless of human intent. The LORD remains faithful to His promises, refusing to allow a curse to overturn the blessing He has already pronounced. For the believer, this underscores the importance of speaking only what God reveals, trusting that His word will accomplish His will.
Application
Trust in God’s sovereignty, recognizing that He directs even the words of those who might oppose us. Seek God’s blessing by living in obedience to His commands, and stand firm in the promises of the covenant, knowing that our security is rooted in God’s faithfulness rather than in circumstances.
