Numbers 25:15

Posted on 24 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.”

Context:Numbers 25 describes a dark period in the history of Israel during their wilderness journey. The Israelites had been seduced by the Moabite and Midianite women to participate in idolatry and sexual immorality. God’s anger was kindled against Israel, and He ordered a plague to punish them. In the midst of this judgment, we encounter the event mentioned in Numbers 25:15.

Cozbi, the Midianitish woman:Cozbi was the daughter of Zur, a prominent Midianite. She held a position of influence as she was from a chief house in Midian. The fact that her name is mentioned signifies her involvement in the incident that took place.

Significance of Cozbi’s identity:Cozbi represents the influence of foreign nations and their false gods on the Israelites. Her presence and relationship with an Israelite man named Zimri (as mentioned in the preceding verses) exemplify the Israelites’ compromise with idolatry, which greatly angered God.

Consequences of Cozbi’s actions:In verse 8, Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, took a spear and zealously killed both Zimri and Cozbi while they were committing sexual immorality in the sight of the whole congregation. Phinehas’ act of zealous obedience to God’s command resulted in the plague being stopped, and he and his descendants were rewarded with an everlasting covenant of peace and the priesthood (Numbers 25:10-13).

Spiritual lessons:

  • God’s expectation of holiness: Numbers 25:15 serves as a reminder that God expects His people to remain faithful and separate from practices that compromise their faith and lead them away from Him. The story highlights the seriousness of sin and the consequences of disobedience.
  • The danger of compromise: Cozbi’s presence and relationship with an Israelite illustrate the dangers of compromise and the influence of worldly practices. It serves as a warning to God’s people to guard against compromising their faith and embracing the ways of the world.
  • The zeal for God’s holiness: Phinehas’ actions demonstrate the importance of standing up for God’s holiness and passionately pursuing obedience to His commands. His zeal for God’s honor led to the preservation of the Israelites and the establishment of a covenant with his descendants.
  • God’s faithfulness and reward: Despite the disobedience and compromise of the Israelites, God remained faithful to His covenant and brought about judgment and restoration. He rewarded Phinehas’ faithfulness by establishing an everlasting covenant of peace and the priesthood for him and his descendants.

In conclusion, Numbers 25:15 highlights the involvement of Cozbi, a Midianitish woman, in the incident that led to God’s judgment upon Israel. This verse serves as a reminder of the dangers of compromise and the importance of zealously pursuing holiness. It also underscores God’s faithfulness and the rewards He bestows upon those who are faithful to Him.
