Numbers 25:15

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

Numbers 25:15 (KJV)

Numbers 25 describes a dark period in Israel’s wilderness journey. The people camped at Shittim, where Moabite and Midianite women led them into idolatry and sexual immorality. God’s anger burned against Israel, and He sent a plague as judgment. In the middle of this crisis, the event of Numbers 25:15 takes place.

Cozbi was the daughter of Zur, a prominent Midianite leader. The verse calls him “head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.” This means Zur was a tribal chief or ruler of an important family. Cozbi’s name is recorded, showing her personal involvement and the seriousness of the sin. Her high social standing did not protect her from judgment. The verse highlights that even prominent individuals were not exempt from God’s judgment. Sin reaches all social levels, and God’s judgment is impartial.

The preceding verse names Zimri, a prince of the Simeonites, as the Israelite man slain with Cozbi. In verse 8, Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, took a spear and killed both Zimri and Cozbi while they were committing the act. Phinehas’ zealous obedience stopped the plague, and God rewarded him and his descendants with an everlasting covenant of peace and the priesthood (Numbers 25:10-13). Later, God commanded Israel to vex the Midianites because they beguiled the people in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi (Numbers 25:16-18). This shows that the sin was not private; it affected the whole community and brought severe consequences.

This verse reminds us that God expects His people to remain holy and separate from practices that compromise their faith. Cozbi’s presence and relationship with an Israelite illustrate the danger of compromise and the influence of worldly practices. Even prominent individuals are not exempt from God’s judgment. Sin reaches all social levels, and God’s judgment is impartial. Believers must guard against temptations that lead away from faithful obedience. The danger of foreign alliances leading to spiritual compromise is clear. We must be careful about the influences we allow into our lives.

Phinehas’ actions demonstrate the importance of standing up for God’s holiness and passionately pursuing obedience to His commands. His zeal for God’s honor led to the preservation of Israel and the establishment of a covenant with his descendants. This teaches us that faithful obedience, even in difficult circumstances, brings God’s blessing. It also warns us of the severe cost of unfaithfulness.

Despite the disobedience and compromise of the Israelites, God remained faithful to His covenant. He brought judgment and restoration. He rewarded Phinehas’ faithfulness by establishing an everlasting covenant of peace and the priesthood for him and his descendants. This verse serves as a sobering reminder of the severe cost of unfaithfulness and the importance of zealously pursuing holiness. It also underscores God’s faithfulness and the rewards He bestows upon those who are faithful to Him. Consider your own life: are there areas where you are compromising your faith? Remember that God sees all and judges righteously, but He also offers mercy to those who turn back to Him.
