Wherefore say, Behold, I giue vnto him my Couenant of peace. Numbers 25:12 (KJV)

Numbers 25 records the Israelites’ sin and God’s response. The people had been seduced by Moabite (or Midianite) women and had engaged in sexual immorality and idolatry, turning away from God’s commandments. As a result God’s anger was kindled and a deadly plague broke out among the nation.

In the midst of this crisis Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, took a decisive stand for righteousness. When he saw an Israelite man bringing a Midianite woman into his tent, Phinehas rose up zealously and drove a spear through both of them, halting the rebellion and ending the plague.

In response to Phinehas’ act, God spoke to Moses and commended Phinehas for his zeal. In Numbers 25:12 God declares, “Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace.” This covenant of peace is a significant blessing and assurance of God’s favour and protection.

Divine Approval

By granting Phinehas the covenant of peace, God demonstrates His approval of Phinehas’ actions. The zealous defense of God’s honour reflects Phinehas’ love and devotion, and the covenant signifies God’s recognition of him as a faithful servant.

Atonement

The covenant also functions as a means of atonement. Phinehas’ decisive judgment turned away God’s wrath, brought reconciliation between God and Israel, and caused the deadly plague to cease. The covenant assures believers that sin and its consequences can be forgiven through obedience and faithfulness.

Divine Protection

The covenant of peace implies ongoing protection and blessing. Phinehas’ zeal preserved the people, and God’s promise of peace pledges to guard His people against further harm, providing a sense of security.

Application – Zeal for God

Phinehas’ example challenges believers to cultivate zeal for God’s commandments and to stand firm against temptation and immorality. Courage in faith is required to confront sin and disobedience.

Application – Reconciliation and Atonement

The covenant points forward to the ultimate atonement accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross. Through Christ’s sacrifice believers receive the covenant of peace, reconciling humanity to God and inviting ongoing reconciliation with others.

Application – God’s Protection

The covenant reminds believers of God’s faithfulness to protect and provide. In times of trouble or when facing the consequences of sin, Christians can trust in God’s covenant of peace, seeking His guidance and protection.

In conclusion, Numbers 25:12 highlights God’s response to Phinehas’ zealous act and the gracious covenant of peace given to him. It underscores the importance of standing up for righteousness, the power of atonement, and God’s promise of protection and peace for those who remain faithful.
