Numbers 26:17

Of Arod, the family of the Arodites: of Areli, the family of the Arelites.

Numbers 26:17 (KJV)

Numbers 26 records the second census of Israel, taken on the plains of Moab as the people prepared to enter the Promised Land. This verse names two clans from the tribe of Gad, one of Jacob’s twelve sons. The earlier census in Numbers 1 counted the same tribe, but this new count was for the generation that would inherit the land. The census was both practical and spiritual, helping Israel organize for the journey ahead and reminding them that God was fulfilling His promises.

The verse lists Arod and Areli as the heads of their families. The Arodites and Arelites were distinct clans within Gad. Their names may carry meanings, but the text does not explain them. The main point is that each family was known and counted by God. This careful record shows that every person and every clan mattered to Him. Even a brief list like this one carries weight because it shows God’s attention to detail.

This census connects to God’s promise to Abraham to make his descendants numerous. It also prepares for the division of the land, as seen in Joshua 13:24-28, where Gad’s territory is described. The naming of these families shows that God keeps His covenant promises across generations. He did not forget any branch of the tribe. The genealogical detail underscores that God knows His people individually and cares for each lineage.

This verse reminds us that God knows each of us individually. Just as He recorded the Arodites and Arelites by name, He knows our names and our families. We can trust that our lives are not hidden from Him. He cares about the details of our heritage and our future. When we feel overlooked, we can remember that God’s record is complete and personal.

Genealogies may seem distant, but they teach us that God works through ordinary families. He preserves identity and fulfills His purposes through generations. When we feel small or forgotten, this verse assures us that we are part of His greater plan. Our place in His story is secure, because the same God who counted these clans also counts us.
