Joshua 13:25

Listen to this article

And their coast was Iazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and halfe the land of the children of Ammon, vnto Aroer that is before Rabbah: Joshua 13:25 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua after the death of Moses. Chapter 13 describes the division of the land among the tribes of Israel, and this verse focuses on the allotment given to the tribe of Reuben.

Geographical references in the verse include several notable locations. Jazer was a city situated in the territory of Gilead on the eastern side of the Jordan River. The “cities of Gilead” refer to a region east of the Jordan known for its fertile land and abundant pasture. The phrase “half the land of the children of Ammon” points to the Ammonite territory east of the Jordan, between the Jabbok and Arnon rivers. Aroer was a city on the northern edge of the Ammonite lands, near Rabbah, their capital.

The inheritance of the tribe of Reuben is rooted in earlier instructions given by Moses (see Numbers 32). Reuben, together with Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, had requested to settle east of the Jordan because the land was suitable for their livestock. Consequently, the verse describes the territory allotted to Reuben as including Jazer, the cities of Gilead, and extending up to Aroer near Rabbah.

This verse underscores God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to the Israelites to possess the land. It also highlights the orderly distribution of territories among the tribes, as directed by God through Moses and now executed by Joshua. The specific mention of cities and landmarks provides valuable historical and geographical context to the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan.

As you continue to study the book of Joshua, you will encounter further accounts of the Israelites’ conquest, the division of the land, and the challenges they faced. This chapter serves as a reminder of God’s steadfast faithfulness and His commitment to fulfill His promises to His people.
