Numbers 31:3

Listen to this article

"And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. The events in Numbers 31 take place after the Israelites had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years.

The Midianites:The Midianites were a nomadic people who inhabited the region east of the Jordan River. They had a history of conflict with the Israelites. In Numbers 25, the Israelites were seduced by the Midianite women and engaged in immoral acts and idolatry, which led to God’s anger and a subsequent plague among the Israelites. In Numbers 31, God commanded Moses to take revenge on the Midianites.

God’s Command:In Numbers 31:3, Moses is instructed by God to assemble an army from among the Israelites to go to war against the Midianites. This command was a call to avenge the Lord of Midian. The Lord, in His righteous judgment, wanted the Israelites to execute divine justice against the Midianites for their role in leading the Israelites astray.

Symbolic Meaning:The command to go to war against the Midianites carries symbolic significance. It represents the ongoing spiritual warfare faced by believers. In the New Testament, Christians are encouraged to put on the whole armour of God (Ephesians 6:11) and engage in a battle against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). The war against the Midianites can be seen as a metaphor for our spiritual battle against sin, temptation, and evil.

Lessons for Today:

  • God’s justice:God’s command to avenge the Lord of Midian reminds us that God is a just God who deals with sin and rebellion. Sin has consequences, and God’s justice demands an appropriate response.
  • Spiritual warfare:The battle against the Midianites serves as a reminder of the ongoing spiritual warfare believers face. We are called to fight against the forces of evil and stand firm in our faith, equipped with God’s armour and guided by His Spirit.
  • Consequences of disobedience:The Israelites’ previous disobedience and involvement with the Midianites led to severe consequences. It is essential for us to remain faithful to God’s commandments and avoid compromising our faith, as disobedience can have serious repercussions.
  • Trusting God’s commands:Moses obediently carried out God’s command to go to war against the Midianites. This highlights the importance of trusting in God’s guidance and following His instructions, even when they may seem difficult or challenging.
