Numbers 32:8

Posted on 1 March 2024
Listen to this article

“This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.”

Historical Context:Before exploring the verse itself, it’s important to understand the historical context. The book of Numbers recounts the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the outskirts of the Promised Land. At this point in the narrative, they are encamped on the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan River.

The Situation:The tribes of Reuben and Gad, known for their abundant livestock, observed the land of Jazer and Gilead on the eastern side of the Jordan River. They found it to be suitable for their livestock and desired to settle there rather than proceeding to conquer Canaan. They approached Moses to make their request.

Moses’ Reminder:In response to their request, Moses reminds the tribes of Reuben and Gad about the previous incident that occurred at Kadesh-barnea. He alludes to the time when Moses had sent out spies to explore the land of Canaan before the Israelites were to enter it.

Lessons from the Past:By referring to the actions of their fathers at Kadesh-barnea, Moses is cautioning the tribes of Reuben and Gad against making the same mistake. Their fathers, along with the other spies, had doubted God’s promise and were fearful of the inhabitants of Canaan. As a result, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years until that generation had passed away.

Implications:Moses’ reminder serves as a warning to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, emphasizing the importance of faith and obedience to God’s command. The Promised Land was God’s gift to the entire nation of Israel, and He expected them to follow His lead and fulfill His purposes.

Application:Numbers 32:8 encourages us to reflect on the lessons of the past and not repeat the mistakes made by those who lacked faith and trust in God. As believers, we are called to follow God wholeheartedly, even when faced with challenges or uncertainties. We should seek God’s guidance and trust in His promises, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill what He has spoken.

In summary, Numbers 32:8 serves as a reminder to the tribes of Reuben and Gad about the consequences of their forefathers’ lack of faith. It urges them to learn from the past and trust in God’s plan. This verse also encourages us to reflect on our own faith and obedience, reminding us of the importance of trusting God’s promises and following Him wholeheartedly.
