“Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: Numbers 32:11 (KJV)”
Context:The book of Numbers records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. At this point, the Israelites were encamped on the east side of the Jordan River, just outside the borders of Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half the tribe of Manasseh, requested to settle in the land of Gilead, east of the Jordan, instead of crossing over to the Promised Land.
God’s Promise:In this verse, God reminds the Israelites of His promise to give the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This promise was made years earlier, and God reaffirms His commitment to fulfill it. The land of Canaan was the inheritance that God had reserved for His chosen people.
Consequence of Disobedience:However, God declares that none of the men who came out of Egypt and were twenty years old or older would see the land of Canaan. This pronouncement was a consequence of their lack of wholehearted obedience and faithfulness to God. Throughout their journey, the Israelites had grumbled, rebelled, and doubted God’s power and provision. Their disobedience had severe consequences, including their exclusion from entering the Promised Land.
Wholly Following God:The reason given for the Israelites’ inability to enter the land was that they had not “wholly followed” God. This phrase emphasizes the importance of complete and unwavering obedience to God’s commands and leading. The Israelites had demonstrated a lack of trust in God’s faithfulness and had not fully committed themselves to following Him wholeheartedly.
Lessons for Us:This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of obedience and faithfulness to God. It highlights the consequences of disobedience and the importance of fully surrendering our lives to God’s will. As followers of God today, we are called to follow Him faithfully and wholeheartedly. We must trust in His promises and remain obedient to His Word, knowing that our actions have consequences and that true blessings come from aligning our lives with His plans.
In summary, Numbers 32:11 teaches us about the consequences of disobedience and the importance of wholeheartedly following God. It reminds us of the need to trust in God’s promises and faithfully obey His commands.
