Numbers 32:11
Surely none of the men that came vp out of Egypt, from twentie yeeres old and vpward, shall see the lande which I sware vnto Abraham, vnto Isaac, and vnto Iacob, because they haue not wholly followed me: Numbers 32:11 (KJV)
The book of Numbers records the events of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai toward the Promised Land. At the point of this declaration the people were encamped on the east side of the Jordan River, just outside the borders of Canaan, having traveled from Egypt and the wilderness.
In this verse God reminds the nation of the covenant promise made long ago to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—that the land of Canaan would be given to their descendants. The promise had been spoken repeatedly, and here God reaffirms His commitment to fulfill it for the people of Israel.
Earlier, in Numbers 14, the spies returned with a discouraging report, and the people rebelled against God, murmuring, refusing to trust Him, and refusing to obey the command to enter the land. Their persistent disbelief and refusal to follow God’s leading provoked divine judgment.
Consequently, God declared that none of the men who had come up out of Egypt and were twenty years old or older would see the promised land, except for Caleb and Joshua, who had trusted Him fully. The judgment was pronounced because those men had not wholly followed the Lord, showing a lack of wholehearted obedience and faithfulness.
The phrase “wholly followed” reflects the requirement to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as echoed in Deuteronomy 8:6. Their failure to do so demonstrates the importance of complete and unwavering obedience to God’s commands and leading. The severe consequence—exclusion from the inheritance—underscores that trust and total commitment are essential for sharing in God’s promises.
