Numbers 32:13

And the Lord’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.

The Lord’s anger burned against Israel because of their unbelief. After ten of twelve spies gave a fearful report, the people refused to trust God and rebelled. As judgment, God made them wander forty years until that entire evil generation died in the wilderness. The number forty is a round figure; from the spies’ report, the remaining time was about thirty-eight years, but the total includes earlier wandering. This wandering was not aimless; it was a purposeful judgment that consumed the disobedient generation.

Biblical connections

This event, recorded in Numbers 14, shows that sin has communal consequences. The whole generation suffered for the rebellion, yet God did not abandon His people.
